Friday, Oct. 21st - Intro to To Kill a Mockingbird
Learning Goal: I will examine the societal beliefs and actions occurring during the setting of this novel. Minds On: What can you see? Cover analysis Action: Harper Lee, the south and racism Consolidation: Sign out a novel and you will have some time to read! HOMEWORK: Chapters 1-3 Monday, 24th Learning Goal: I will continue to examine the setting and political situation surrounding TKAM Minds On: Videos re: life in the south and HL Action: Characters. Who do we know so far? Consolidation: Time to read! 4-7 due for tomorrow. Tuesday, 25th - Epigraphs and Allusions Learning Goal: I will examine the epigraph and allusions in the first chapter to determine how they contribute to my understanding of the intro and the novel. Minds On: Examination of the epigraph Action: Note and group work - tracing these 6 allusions. Consolidation: How do these connect with your predictions? Wednesday, 26th Learning Goal: I will continue to examine TKAM Minds On: What do we know so far? Character poster presentations! Action: Describing setting - passage analysis task -Time to read! Consolidation: Tell the truth! What do you like about this novel thus far? What do you absolutely hate? Tell me something random (needs to connect to TKAM but can be any connection you have made so far). On a post-it, put what page you are on in your TKAM text. This is anonymous so please tell the truth! Wednesday, 26th Learning Goal: I will continue to examine TKAM by exploring setting Minds On: Describe your "home town" Action: Discussion of chapter 4-6 Lesson Chance to read Consolidation: In all honesty... Thursday, 27th Learning Goal: I will continue to examine TKAM by exploring Minds On: Green sheet! Complete as much as you can in 15 minutes! Action: Discussion of chapter 7-8 Lesson - break into groups! you will be responsible for 1-2 questions. You must come up with a creative way to convey your answers to your classmates! Chance to read Consolidation: Writing prompt... Recall and describe a time from you childhood where you portrayed similar characteristics to either Jem or Scout. Tell the story. Friday, 28th Work period! You may work on reading your ISU, completing your next ISU task sheet, or reading and q's from TKAM. |

Learning Goal: I will continue to examine TKAM by examining the importance of key scenes in part 1 Minds On: Question Check! (we will take these up tomorrow!) Action: Mad Dog and the Fire... Paragraph task (to be submitted to me!) What makes a great parent/role model? Why is Atticus a great father? We are examining why Atticus is thought to be one of the greatest characters ever... Quick! Those of you with data, quickly look up the meaning of "Atticus" and possible connections. You must use quotes! Embedding quotes and transitions review Consolidation: Can you think of someone who is comparable to Atticus? Give three pieces of evidence! Tuesday, November 01st - up to ch 18 read (ch 13 q's to be handed in!) Learning Goal: I will continue to examine TKAM by examining the importance of key scenes in part 1 Minds On: Popcorn! "to see what real courage is" - Write a journal reflection from Jem's point of view. How did he feel about reading to Mrs. Dubose? How did he feel when she died? Do you think he made the connection between reading to MD and Atticus taking the TR case and fighting for a cause you believe in even though you probably will not win? Action: Questions challenge - Present your answers in a creative way but you only have 15 minutes to create your masterpiece! Consolidation: Reflect on the connection between Atticus shooting the mad dog (Tim Johnson) and the Tom Robinson case. Can you make any predictions? ***No spoilers for those of you who have read ahead!*** Wednesday, Nov. 2nd - 21 read Learning Goal: Minds On: Reflection - Reflect on the town's inability to "put themselves in someone else's shoes" and take the word of an untrustworthy, cruel man over that of an honest, hardworking man simply because of the colour of his skin and their racial prejudices. What threat does evil and hatred pose to innocence and goodness. Discuss - The novel associates children with fairness to suggest that a sense of justice is innate, not learned, and therefore adults must have learned to be unjust. Action: Present your chapter questions! You should be checking your answers as we go! Read! Consolidation: Tim vs Tom The fire, the dog, the mob, the discussion....coming soon!
